Win the First Four Blackthorn Books – Signed!

Books

Earlier this month, I mentioned that Bookouture asked if my readers might like to be in with a chance of winning the first four Blackthorn books in a giveaway. My answer was easy, and you proved me right with a fantastic response to the prospect both here and on Facebook. Thank you!

Well, today’s the day!

Thanks to the uber-lovely Kim Nash, Bookouture’s Publicity Manager, we have a one-off-never-before-done giveaway of all four of the first Blackthorn books (in paperback) signed by me.

But, for the first time ever in a Blackthorn giveaway, the winner isn’t going to be picked out of a hat. This time, Kim is going to judge the entries and select the winner!

Blackthorn’s Most Heartless Anti-Hero?

Sometimes, conversations with my readers spark a blog post. This blog post was inspired by a collection of conversations about Caleb Dehain, the “hero” of Blood Roses.

*WARNING: Contains HUGE spoilers for Blood Roses*

Blood Roses NEW Createspace.indd

Blackthorn’s most controversial book to date is Blood Roses. Its hero, Caleb Dehain, is the most polarizing of all. Why? Because when it comes to traits that romantic heroes (even anti-heroes) are supposed to have, Caleb could be deemed as falling short. This is exacerbated by the question as to whether he’d redeemed himself in any way by the end of Blood Roses. Some readers say yes, some say no. Some readers think he has every potential of redeeming himself by the end of the series, others think he’s already on the slippery slope from anti-hero to outright villain.

I think that’s why Caleb has been one of my favourite characters to write – not only because of his unpredictability, but because from writing his opening scene in Blood Roses to his final scene in… okay, no spoilers ;-)… I think he has the toughest character journey. And it’s hard to call what the outcome will be. A big part of that is because, like all of my heroes, Caleb is damaged. But when it comes to an injection of darkness, Caleb has a syringe-full – and it’s easy to think it’s gone straight to his heart.

I’ve written some detailed posts about Caleb before so I’m going to be wary of repeating myself, but it seems that one of the key things that has haunted Caleb’s character since Blood Roses is that question of redemption I mentioned above.

No one can deny that Caleb was hardline with Leila through most of the book. I know his treatment of her had some of you in tears, and plenty more screaming in frustration (and that’s not ignoring the heart flutters either). And I know many who endured the intense and relentless battle between these two characters wanted, pleaded even, that, by the end, Caleb would be on bended knee – either in a confession of true love for Leila, or because he’d received the pointy end of her shoe.

But there was neither.

A few readers have asked me why I chose to end the book that way.

Keeping it authentic

Firstly, ultimately it’s down to retaining the authenticity of a character. Yes, Blood Roses is a romance because it is, first and foremost, about the developing love (and hate) relationship between Caleb Dehain and Leila McKay. But to have had Caleb professing his undying love for Leila by the end of the story meant that, in less than three days, Caleb would have had to have:

  • Overcome the psychological scarring caused by the serryn who had held him captive as a youngster, torturing and degrading him for days – and all for fun.
  • Pushed aside all the memories of the witnessing the same treatment of countless vampires, some children, at that same serryn’s hands.
  • Been guilty of dismissing how his older brother, who he worshipped, had been cruelly murdered by a serryn.
  • Accepted that the species renowned for seductive smiles and pretty faces fronting inhumane hearts were actually not all that bad.
  • Believed, after countless encounters with serryns, there was an exception to the rule, thus accepting that his entire belief system about them could be wrong.
  • Believed that a serryn fighting for her survival and the survival of her sister, wouldn’t put on a mask of innocence just to fool him – and stab him in the back when it was turned.
  • Had complete faith that Leila truly had no intention of fulfilling her destiny and prevent the vampire uprising – this bearing in mind she had turned up laden with her own prejudices against his kind.
  • Had the arrogance to believe that someone he had treated so badly was capable of falling for him – especially as she’d subsequently forsake her own destiny.
  • Overcome the sense of betrayal that still lingered from Feinith’s betrothal to Jarin (whose actions had led to Seth being found by a serryn in the first place).
  • Over-ridden his most basic instincts as the prophesied leader to kill serryns.
  • Allowed himself to be emotionally vulnerable in front of the one woman most likely to throw it all back in his face because of the very nature of what she is.
  • And, once he’d found out it was his role to be that leader and save his race from the iron fist oppression of the human, been willing to throw away any hope his own kind had for the sake of his own selfish love.

If Caleb was capable of all the above after just three days, not only do I think that would have reduced the authenticity of his character, I think it would have diminished just how fragile his heart really is – a heart that, by those very clues, is still very much beating.

Anticipation of the future

Secondly, with the overarching plot of the Blackthorn series in mind, it was the most appropriate way to end Blood Roses bearing in mind the essential role Caleb is prophesied to play in the future of Blackthorn. After all, by the end of Blood Deep, the writing is literally on the wall: A war is coming. A stand-off is going to occur between the head of the Global Council, Sirius Throme, and the prophesied vampire leader, Caleb Dehain, with devastating consequences. Everyone else is going to be caught in the middle – the “good” guys intent on preventing the clash from happening.

That prospect is so much more interesting, I think, when not only do you know the extent of the potential of a character as dark as Caleb but, because of that darkness, you really can’t tell how it’s going to pan out. Basically, is Caleb mad, bad and dangerous enough to take on Sirius? Could the impact really be that devastating? Or could Leila potentially turn him around in time?

If the latter question was as easy to answer as the first two, where’s the tension in that?

At the end of Blood Roses, a heartless Caleb would have killed Leila and claimed his Tryan status. He didn’t. It would take a whole other blog post to summarise why – but it’s all there in the story itself. Even when Caleb realised that Leila had lost all hope in redeeming him, that she had finally decided to kill him, he couldn’t see it through. Instead, he chose to take Leila’s serrynity from her so that using her was no longer an option. More than that, Caleb took a massive leap of faith by trusting Leila when she claimed she could find an alternative to what seemed to be an inevitably catastrophic future for them all. She asked him to give her seven days. He accepted – but, of course, with reservations.

I don’t think this makes him heartless, I think it makes him astute. I think it’s an act indicative of what makes him a survivor in Blackthorn. And the fact he’s not shown all his cards yet, that he’s still holding back, shows the extent of just how guarded his heart is – a heart guarded because he’s more than aware of the scars that still linger there. At the same time, I also think, for Caleb, the ending to Blood Roses is the first glimmer of hope…

…if Leila is true to her word. The sight isn’t going to be pretty if not!

*This post is with special thanks to Suzanne, who has waited so patiently in the wings for its arrival. xxx

Blackthorn’s Biggest Audiobook Giveaway

A couple of months ago, we celebrated the release of Blackthorn on audio with a giveaway of the first audiobook in the series, Blood Shadows. To enter, I’d asked you to let me know where in the world you are – and the response was amazing, both here and on Facebook.

I was so thrilled that I knew we’d have to have another giveaway once the next audiobooks in the series came out. And, thanks to the generosity of Bookouture and Lorella Belli Literary agency, and your incredible input, we decided we could make the next one even bigger than the last.

THE PRIZES…

Blood Shadows proved so popular that, this time, we’re going to give away a further 3 signed copies.

Above: Blood Shadows Audio CDs (unabridged, 10 discs, 12 hrs). Narrator: Anne Flosnik

Also in the running, is one signed copy of Blood Roses.

We were only going to give away one copy of Blood Torn too, but to celebrate it winning Best Paranormal Romance 2014 on Moonrise Book Blog (thanks to YOUR votes), we’ve added in an extra three to make a total of 4 signed copies of Blood Torn up for grabs as well.

And then we have the GRAND PRIZE…a chance to win all three!

aIMG_6356

That means there are NINE prizes up for grabs in total!

HOW TO ENTER…

The whole point of giveaways is that they’re supposed to be simple and fun, so all you have to do is answer one question to enter. Inspired by one of my fantastic Facebook supporters, Dianne, who regularly chats to me about the prospect of my Blackthorn heroes turning up on her doorstep, your question is:

If you had the opportunity to invite THREE of Blackthorn’s main characters to a dinner party, which three would you invite and why? (You have to say why for your entry to be valid!)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Leave your answer either in the comments below or, if you’re not comfortable posting publicly, feel free to send me a private message via contact above. As I stated in a post yesterday, readers can no longer enter via Facebook sadly, but I do hope this won’t discourage you from joining in.

CLOSING DATE…

The competition will be open for ten days to give you plenty of time to think it over. It is open now and will close on the Tuesday 17th February (midnight, UK time). The winners will be randomly selected and announced on Thursday 19th February.

So whether you love audiobooks or just fancy an exclusive signed copy as a Blackthorn keepsake, now’s your chance!

Good luck, everyone! xxx

Who Won Blood Shadows on Audio?

Last week, I launched a giveaway to win Blood Shadows on audio (CD) – signed. Thank you to every single person who so enthusiastically joined in both here and on Facebook. Win Blood Shadows on Audio – Signed!

It feels like ages since I’ve held a giveaway so, to help spread the festive spirit, I decided it was time for another.

Last month, Blackthorn launched on audio with Blood Shadows thanks to Tantor Media (who acquired the rights back in the Summer). Blood Roses is out on audio today and Blood Torn will be available at the end of the month.

I was clapping my hands with glee when my Blood Shadows CDs arrived all the way from the States last week, and not least because they look amazing!

AdobePhotoshopExpress_2014_12_09_18:10:09
FullSizeRender

Even better, they sound amazing too – all thanks to the wonderful Anne Flosnik who has narrated the first three books. Just like the first time I held a copy of my book, I didn’t let them out of my sight for hours (my presh-usss). Needless to say though, I would love a Blackthorn fan to have one straight out of the original box. So here goes…

The Giveaway

One copy of Blood Shadows (unabridged) on audio CD (10 discs in total) could be yours. You can either have it sealed or I’ll sign the inside of the cover for you. This will be the first audio CD ever signed by me so it might make a nice keepsake.

AdobePhotoshopExpress_2014_12_09_17:12:33

How to Enter

I’m going to make this really easy, and sate my curiosity at the same time. Blackthorn fans and supporters are spread all over the world, which is just immense. To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is tell me where you are. Just leave your name and location (country for definite, city/town/village if you’re feeling brave!) either in the comments section below or on my Facebook page and you’ll automatically be entered. If you’re not comfortable with posting the information live, feel free to send me a private message.

Closing Date

I’ll close the competition this Saturday (13th Dec) at midnight, UK time. The winner will be randomly selected and announced on Sunday (14th Dec). I’ll post anywhere, so there are no restrictions.

I do hope you’ll join in. Best of luck, everyone! xxx

Blackthorn and Bookouture are Celebrating :)

Today, is the second anniversary of both the launch of my first Blackthorn novel, Blood Shadows, and also the launch of its fantastic publisher, Bookouture.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Above: Happy 2nd Birthday, Blackthorn! What a 2 years it has been!!

Bookouture are currently celebrating with cake and bubbles, and rightly so! Since signing me, they have gone on to acquire many exceptional authors – both debut and established. Bookouture have had eight Amazon top 100 hits in the UK, three in the US, two in Canada and even one in France. They’ve sold hundreds of thousands of eBooks – and quite a few paperbacks, too! This week alone, they have three books in the Amazon UK top 100!

From being a one-man-band consisting of its Founder and Managing Director, Oliver Rhodes, Bookouture has expanded its publishing team too. Claire Bord, formerly of Avon (HarperCollins), became Bookouture’s Publishing Director with the aim of developing and expanding their publishing programme. As part of that, Keshini Naidoo (previously having worked with eBook bestsellers, also at Avon) joined the team as Senior Commissioning Editor with a focus on crime and thriller titles. To keep up with increased demand, the super-supportive Kim Nash joined as Bookouture’s Publicity Manager. Bookouture also linked up with the Lorella Belli Literary Agency who has since sold rights in France, Germany, Norway, Italy, Turkey, India and the Middle East, as well as doing deals for audio rights.

It’s amazing how far Bookouture have come, and I am immensely proud to have been there from the beginning. Bookouture has undoubtedly been the best thing to happen to Blackthorn. It might be a small, independent publisher, but darn they’re exceptional at what they do (proof above)! With ‘Big 5’ experience within a dedicated, hard-working, author-centric team of professionals, it’s no wonder that, along with the success of their books, Bookouture continues to be so highly praised by its authors.

As for me, it’s hard to believe that it was two years ago that I held a copy of my book for the first time; that I was a bag of nerves waiting to see what PNR reviewers, let alone readers, would make of my debut, Blood Shadows.

69feeab87aa21aa70a960622ec06044e

Above: A sample of reviews from the launch of Blackthorn, Nov 2012

Thankfully, many bloggers and reviewers embraced Blackthorn – and so did many more readers. If you’re reading this now, you’re likely to be one of those very readers who, like Bookouture, decided to take a punt on a new PNR series. You’re probably part of the reason why, through your reviews, ratings or word-of-mouth recommendations, the rest of the series has been signed. Thank you. Because being signed by a terrific publisher may be one of the best things to happen to an author, but so are great supporters. I have the privilege of having some of the best. 🙂

So before I leave you with the trailer that kicked the series off two years ago (which includes the original cover before the rebrand), I can’t do so without first wishing all my U.S. followers a wonderful Thanksgiving. Enjoy!

The Rest of Blackthorn is Signed!

I’m uber-thrilled to be able to share that the rest of the Blackthorn series has officially been signed! I’m just as thrilled to be able to announce that Blackthorn will remain with its original publisher, Bookouture.

Having been inundated with queries as to how many more books there will be, I can now reveal that Blackthorn will consist of eight books in total – that means there are four more to come!

111

Above: We’re halfway there… spot the “unintentional” giveaway clue on the spine of the books.

It feels like a long time since I shared Bookouture’s interest in the rest of the series. Before signing a contract though, there’s a lot to take into account. Firstly, I needed to make a final decision as to how many books there would be (the final book could have been broken into two parts, but we opted for an epic finale). I also needed to think carefully about the timescales for when I could deliver those books. Most of you will know that, like most authors, writing isn’t my only job. So when Bookouture offered me a contract for the rest of the series, I had a huge decision to make. Six weeks ago, I resolved to step out of teaching for a while and focus fully on finishing writing Blackthorn. So, as of 2015, I will be a full-time author for the first time ever – and Blackthorn will be receiving my undivided attention all the way through to its conclusion.

Blackthorn has certainly come a long way since its inception back in 1996 when, having just moved to a big city hundreds of miles from all I knew, I got lost on my way home one night. I then spent fourteen years dipping in and out of developing the series amidst working on other writing projects and teaching full time. Back in 2010, I finally bit the bullet and entered the opening chapter of Blood Roses into the international online romance writing competition, ‘New Voices’. Although up against thousands of entries, a combination of editors’ decisions and reader votes saw Blood Roses through to the final. A year later, Blackthorn made it to the final again – this time with Blood Shadows.

For those who don’t know, it was Blackthorn’s success in that competition that brought me to the attention of Bookouture. I’d just started submissions when, out of the blue, they got in touch. A three-book deal soon followed. Just over a year later, back in January, they signed Blood Deep. Blackthorn has gone on to sell tens of thousands of copies, with new readers finding the books every day. It doesn’t mean I’ve ever taken the signing of the rest of the series for granted though. That’s why it still felt momentous signing the last of the books over.

So here they are in Blackthorn’s full line-up: all your heroes and heroines who now have their work cut out in bringing down the oppressive system that surrounds them. I can’t wait to share how they’re going to do it! 🙂

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And on that note, I’m also pleased to be able to reveal that Blood Dark will be released next Summer* (2015)! Yes, I know it probably feels likes ages away, but I’m afraid a lot of work goes into publishing a book even after I’ve submitted it. Fingers crossed I’ll be able to persuade Bookouture to give away an early book or two like we did with Blood Deep. 😉

Of course, I’ll also be sharing a summary of ‘the story so far’ before Blood Dark’s release. I get the feeling it might prove useful by then!

Thanks, as always, for your continued support. xxx

*That’s UK Summertime.

Blood Shadows on Audio

A little while ago, I announced that the first three Blackthorn books are going to be available on audio. Well, today’s the day! As of now, Blood Shadows is available unabridged in Audio CD, MP3-CD and Audio Download with Tantor Media (Blood Roses and Blood Torn will follow next month). It’s perfect timing as it’s two years this month that Blood Shadows, my debut novel, was first published.

In the post where I first shared the news, I also said I’d give some insight into what happens during the audio conversion process for those who might be interested…

Tantor

It was five months ago that Tantor Media emailed to show an interest in acquiring the first three Blackthorn books for audio. It was one of those surreal moments (not unlike when Bookouture got in touch out of the blue) that I never saw coming. With no experience of deals like this, I was glad to have Lorella Belli Literary Agency at the helm to handle it all.

Once everything had been signed and sealed, a narrator was assigned to Blackthorn – British multi-award-winning actress, Anne Flosnik. Lorella had arranged it that myself and Bookouture were to approve the narrator selected for my books, so I was sent a sample of Anne’s work. As soon as I heard the energy and passion in her narration, I knew Anne was right to read Blackthorn. My approval was instant.

Flosnik_A_D

Above: Anne Flosnik – Blackthorn’s narrator

I wasn’t sure what to expect after that, but assumed it would all be out of my hands. Produced by a leading audio publishing company, read by a skilled narrator, and knowing Blood Shadows would remain unabridged, I was at ease with it all. The only other thing I had my fingers tightly crossed for was that there would be consistency between the covers of the books and CDs. Gladly that was agreed.

photoCOV2

Above: The audio cover for BLOOD SHADOWS

To be honest, I’d convinced myself I wasn’t even going to listen to the audiobooks – the same as I’ve never re-read any of my books once they’ve been published. There was something about someone else reading my work back to me – a secondary voice replacing the one in my head – that felt peculiar.

photoNewSyn

Above: The synopsis for BLOOD SHADOWS as presented on Tantor Media

That decision didn’t last long though, especially after I received an email from Anne herself. She was well underway reading my books, was getting a sense of where she was heading and was starting to get into the characters’ heads as all professional actors do. Not only was I getting a real sense of how much background work goes into producing an audiobook, Anne had a real passion for my characters and their stories. It all suddenly became very real. This wasn’t some distant project anymore – Anne was keeping me very much involved to ensure she portrayed the books as closely to my original intentions as she could. And, to enable that to happen, she had some questions…

THE ACCENTS

Anne knew I was a British author, so queried if I wanted regional or class accents assigned to my characters. As she knew Blackthorn is a series, this was particularly in relation to any possible revelations in later books. I have to say I loved that she was thinking that far ahead.

My vision from the moment I started writing Blackthorn was that I didn’t want it to be assigned to one specific location. I’ve never even made any direct reference to Blackthorn being British within the actual books themselves, primarily because it’s irrelevant in terms of the story. However, despite not specifying the location, it has always been important to me that Blackthorn retained its British identity – hence the inevitable giveaways in my terminology, grammar and spelling!

So, in terms of accents, I’d always envisaged a neutral RP for my characters (a softer and milder form of the Queen’s English as opposed to aristocratic). Of course, for those readers who have been in touch to let me know their own accent preferences, that’s more than fine too! 😉

… AND SPEECH CHARACTERISTICS

Anne also checked if I had any preferences for speech characteristics, pitch or tone to help define my characters. This one was trickier to explain beyond such vocal qualities as rasps. After eighteen years of “working” with them, I can hear my characters distinctly. I also have a habit of sometimes reading aloud when writing dialogue (a side-effect of spending my teenage years writing scripts to perform sketches and plays at my local church hall), so know how each line should sound. With my fingers crossed that the text speaks for itself beyond the nuances, I was more than happy to leave it to Anne’s interpretation.

THE PRONUNCIATIONS

But then came the biggie – the pronunciations. I’ve lived with the books for so long, I hadn’t realised just how much vocabulary there was in the stories that is exclusive to Blackthorn e.g. terms like ‘serryns’ and names such as ‘Jask’. Anne broke each unfamiliar word down to stresses in order to meticulously check each one. Here are just a few examples of the ones Anne queried, with confirmations of how they are actually pronounced (stresses in capitals):

Jarin – JAHrin

Tuly – TULee

Arana – AHranuh

Serryn – SEHrin

Amilek – AHmilek (“’i” as in “it”)

Nirus – NIrus

Feinith – FAYnith

Sphariga – SFARigah (“i” as above)

Hade – HAYd

Dehain – duhHAYN

Armun – AREmun

Tryan – TRYan

Marid – MAHrid

MY PART DONE

After Anne had confirmed everything she needed to know, after she had finished prepping, as soon as the recordable text came through, she started the long task of narrating. During the recording process, she very kindly sent me updates, and it was always exciting (and reassuring) to know it was going well. It also helped immensely that Anne was thoroughly enjoying my books personally as well as professionally. I couldn’t have asked for more.

photoFAC

So with copies now heading my way, I can’t wait to see and hear the finished product. As soon as I have them, I’ll take a photo to share with you. And if you download or get a copy for yourself, do let me know what you think!

Oh, and just to give you the heads-up, I have some more very exciting news coming your way in the next few days. Stay close!

Have a great week! xxx

Blackthorn on Audio – with Tantor!

Blood-Lindsay-website-header

I mentioned a while ago that some exciting things had been going on in the background that I couldn’t wait to share with you. Well, this is it! I am beyond thrilled to be able to tell you that Tantor Media have selected the first three books in my Blackthorn series to be produced in audio format!

I received an email late Summer wherein Tantor cited their interest in my series. Not only was I astonished that they had discovered Blackthorn, but that they showed a keen interest in starting the ball rolling straight away. The fabulous Lorella Belli Literary Agency took over from that point on behalf of both Bookouture and myself to make sure everything went ahead seamlessly. Thank you so much for all your hard work in the background, Lorella!

Tantor

For those who aren’t familiar with Tantor (and so you can be assured that Blackthorn is in very safe hands), it’s a leading independent audiobook publisher based in the States. Tantor is the recipient of numerous Audie Awards, AudioFile Earphones Awards and Publishers Weekly Listen-Up Awards.

Boasting must-have authors and award-winning titles, Tantor’s extensive catalogue includes Man Booker, Pulitzer, and National Book Award winners, as well as countless New York Times bestsellers and titles with starred reviews from all the major publications. They have a brilliant list of PNR titles already and I’ll be amongst extremely good company with Lara Adrian, Nalini Singh and Ilona Andrews on their list! Needless to say I am beyond delighted to have Blackthorn chosen by them.

I am exceptionally privileged that Anne Flosnik has been selected to be the narrator.

Flosnik_A_D

Ms Flosnik is an accomplished multi-award-winning British actress lauded for her work in fiction, romance, suspense, and fantasy. She has garnered two AudioFile Earphones Awards, an ALA Award, and three Audie Award nominations. Her narration also earned her one of the Best Audiobooks of the Year 2009 by AudioFile magazine. Though I must confess, it wasn’t just her impressive background and listening to samples of her work that won me over – but when I discovered she had narrated my all-time favourite classic, Wuthering Heights!

Not only is Ms Flosnik super-lovely (and so professional), a huge bonus is how much she’s enjoying the series so far. Here’s what she had to say about Blackthorn:

“I am completely spell bound by these beautifully crafted books. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to be working with such exquisite writing. It’s very easy to care about your characters, and they, the events, and the world that you have created for them are grippingly real, on an almost visceral level. I am on the edge of my seat to discover how everything plays out, to say the very least. It truly is an honour to be the narrator for these magnificent books.”

How amazing is that?

And when I said Tantor are acting quickly, I meant it! Not only is Ms Flosnik already underway with the narration, all three books will be available on audio THIS year:

Blood Shadows released 18th November 2014

Blood Roses released 9th December 2014

Blood Torn released 30th December 2014

They’re already available for pre-order for anyone searching for something for their Christmas list. 😉 (Don’t let the old covers on Blood Shadows and Blood Roses confuse you, they’ll be replaced with the new ones in time for release.)

Once all the excitement about Blood Deep’s release dies down, I’ll write a post for all those who would like to know what’s been going on behind the scenes – and what really happens in the background when a book gets selected for audio. It has been a fascinating experience.

Have a great week! xxx
