The Blackthorn Album – Readers’ Choices

When I set up this competition and put a call out for songs for the Blackthorn Album (mock-up, I must stress!), I didn’t expect so many suggestions! More so, I’ve been thrilled with how apt your choices are. Yep, I’ve googled all the lyrics.

When I write a book, I have no idea how it will be received. I don’t know if readers will see what I see, feel what I feel, or care about the world I’ve created anywhere near as much as I do. Aside from reviews and individual messages, this has been the closest I’ve come to seeing how you view Blackthorn and the characters residing there. What has shone through from this competition is how much you’ve been peeling away the emotional layers of the characters and sifting through the complexity of their relationships – and totally getting it. And I love that so many of these song choices – despite a good number being as suitably dark in theme as the books themselves – are laced with hope. The fact you are rooting for the survival of these characters and their relationships is just immense.

So thank you to every single person who got involved in this – we’ve ended up with a triple album! And here we go – your awesome choices (I had to include them all) and the categories you put them in…

Have a great week, everyone!

Win a Signed Blackthorn Postcard

Postcard1a

Last week, I posted this image on Facebook and it received a fabulous response. As a result, I’ve decided to convert it into some limited-edition postcards – signed, of course – to give away. But this is Blackthorn, so nothing is ever that easy. 😉

Inspired by one of my lovely readers, Kat, who got in touch to tell me she’d attributed songs to my Blackthorn couples, I thought this would be a great theme for this giveaway. She’d decided that Kane and Caitlin’s song is ‘Do What U Want’ by Lady Gaga, and Caleb and Leila’s song is Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’. I’m sure there are many more!

So, to be in with a chance of winning, just tell me what song you think deserves a place on the Blackthorn compilation album. It can be about individual characters, couples or even Blackthorn itself. You can post your choice via the comments section below or on the related Facebook post. You’ve got until midnight on Friday (UK time) to enter. Then, over the weekend, I’ll draw five random names out of a hat and let you know who’s won on Monday. There’s no limit where I’ll send the postcards, so don’t let distance put you off! Good luck! 🙂

Blackthorn’s a UK #1 Too!

What a few days it has been! Not only has Blood Torn been doing well in the charts since its release on Friday, yesterday I was thrilled when Blood Shadows reached the #1 spot in Amazon.com’s Gothic Romance chart. Then at lunchtime today, I was elated to see all 3 Blackthorn books had hit the Top 4 in the Gothic Romance chart over here on Amazon UK.

Just when I thought the excitement was over, I received word that Blood Shadows had since reached #1 in Amazon UK’s Paranormal Vampire Romance chart! Yay!!

photo-1 copy

But that’s it now – no more boring you with stats and chart positions, I promise. As you’ve probably guessed, I use this blog as a diary for myself as well as to update you, and I couldn’t possibly not have this on the records.

So thanks again to everyone who is continuing to spread the word. And also extra special thanks to my incredible publisher, Bookouture, who are working relentlessly in the background to ensure Blackthorn meets as many readers as possible. Clearly it’s working!

But before Jask starts getting jealous of Kane stealing all his limelight, I’ll end the night here in the UK with another Bite. Go on, Jask, you tell ’em…

Blood-Torn_bites_6

I’ll have another Bite for you tomorrow!

Blackthorn Hits No.1 – Again!

We did it, Team Blackthorn – Blackthorn is back at number 1 in Amazon’s U.S. Gothic Romance chart! Blood Shadows has not only hit the #1 spot for the second time, it has even earned itself a ‘Best Seller’ label!

photo-1

And Blood Torn is close behind – snapping at its heels at number 4. Blood Roses is also doing well, just skirting the periphery of the Top 10.

(Yes, that’s Blood Torn lurking in the ‘Hot New Releases’ too!)

And Blackthorn’s doing well on Amazon UK too. Not only did Blood Torn go straight into the Gothic Romance bestsellers chart on Saturday, but it wasn’t alone – all three Blackthorn books were in the Top 10 simultaneously. Yay!! 😀

Screen Capture11

The books are also doing well in the Paranormal Romance Top 50, particularly in the vampire chart. I could bore you with numbers for ages, but the fact is that this is all thanks to every single reader who has gone out and supported the series.

I’m overwhelmed by the response to Blood Torn so far, so thank you so much everyone who has finished the book and got in touch to let me know what you think. And for those who have written reviews or are planning to – I hope you know how much I appreciate it. There’s no better way to spread the word to other readers than through readers themselves.

And on that note, I also want to say huge congrats to the lovely Tima Maria Lacoba (Blackthorn fan!), who’s own vampire romance, BLOODGIFTED, also made it into Amazon.com’s ‘Hot New Releases’ in Gothic Romance this weekend – at #38. It’s great to be chart-buddies with you, Tima!

Blood Torn Cover Reveal and Blackthorn’s New Look

A little while ago, Bookouture conferred with me about the possibility of a new look for my Blackthorn series. At first, I wasn’t sure. I loved the covers as they were – no doubt about that. Then I was shown the new version. Hands up, I fell in love with them instantly. Not only do they now feature a glimpse of the district of Blackthorn itself, but both the heroine and hero make it onto the front cover of each. Vibrant, energetic and combining both the romantic and thriller elements that define the books, I’m totally elated with the final result. I hope you like the new look too!

So, without further delay, here’s the cover unveiling for Blood Torn (book 3) – and you can scroll down to see the new look Blood Roses (book 2) and Blood Shadows (book 1).

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Blackthorn is Nominated in the GraveTells Readers Choice Awards!

I’m absolutely thrilled to have found out today that Blackthorn has been nominated for TWO awards in the 2013 GraveTells Readers Choice Awards. Woo hoo!!

LOGO-ReadersChoiceAwards2013-300x270

Blackthorn is up for the ‘The Most Original Story Universe’ award.

w

And Caleb Dehain from Blood Roses is up for ‘The Most Sensual Vampire’ award.

(Sorry to Kane’s fans, but he can’t be in the running as Blood Shadows was published outside of the timeframe for this year’s awards.)

q

Thank you to everyone who put these forward as nominees – I HUGELY appreciate it.

AND I’m just as thrilled to see that Bookouture is nominated for the ‘Favourite Publisher’ award too! I totally agree, obviously.

Voting begins this Sunday (15th), so if you think Blackthorn and/or Caleb deserve to win, or that Bookouture truly are the most awesome of awesome publishers for bringing the Blackthorn series to readers in the first place, please head over to the GraveTells site on Sunday and register your vote. You might also find some others you want to vote for in other categories – the more the merrier!

Have a great week, everyone! 🙂

A Year Ago Today…

A year ago today was the official release date of Blood Shadows (though some might remember it sneaking out early) and, with it, the launch of Blackthorn.

Blackthorn never started off as a project where I set out to get it published. It simply started as one idea that I found intriguing enough to write about…and keep writing about…and spend another sixteen years building and developing while I experimented with other genres and other books.

It’s ironic that the one project I thought would never see the light of day was the one that launched my writing career. But some works are a labour of love, where you’re led by the feeling in your gut that the story is best written than never said at all. For me, Blackthorn is very much like that.

The fact it got published and that so many readers have enjoyed it is the bonus I never saw coming. Especially because, when I first resolved to take the leap and try to get Blackthorn out there, I had the option to compromise. I could have easily pulled back on certain aspects or issues, have gone softer, lightened the darkness, let alone had my characters always making the right decisions or taking ‘appropriate’ actions. But life’s not like that. And fantasy though it may be, neither is Blackthorn.

So thank you every one who has accepted that. To everyone who has supported me, shared my posts and Bites, been on here and commented, retweeted me, taken the time to rate my books or write reviews, mentioned my books to friends, made open proclamations of your enjoyment of the series, and for every wonderful email – thank you for an awesome year and for being a part of it with me.

To Bookouture – thank you for your faith in the series and bringing it to readers, and doing so in such an exceptional and exciting way.

And to my long-suffering husband (who has spent almost twenty years stepping over post-it notes and notebooks, standing on blunt pencils, tolerating my excessive drifting off into space and switching on the torch at 3 a.m. to write down dialogue or plot points…), thanks for being there every step of the way.

So, to mark the occasion, here’s a reminder of the book trailer (now over 1,700 views on YouTube!) that launched the series…

Happy birthday, Blood Shadows. 🙂

Blackthorn Back at the Top!

Okay, so my next post was supposed to be about lycans…but this is too exciting not to share!!

On a day that started like any other Wednesday – me bleary eyed and gulping down coffee whilst stumbling around getting myself ready for school – I was greeted by a fabulous email from my publisher…Blood Shadows is back at the top!

In the Summer, I was bouncing off the walls with excitement when Blood Shadows hit the No. 1 spot in the U.S. Amazon Gothic Romance chart. Not convinced I’d ever get that close again, I made the most of the moment. But now today, Blood Shadows is back – and at No.2! 😀

8888

Not just that but No. 6 in the Vampire Romance Chart on Amazon.com… 😀

777

My home country is being equally as supportive, with BOTH Blood Shadows and Blood Roses in the Top 4 in the Gothic Romance Chart on Amazon UK! 😀

Convincing readers to try your books is tough, really tough – especially when they have no idea who you are. Sometimes comparisons help. I get compared to J.R. Ward more than any other author. Some readers are in agreement, some are not. I’ve only read one of Ms Ward’s books so I’m nowhere in a position to comment, but I do know what an incredible author she is. So when I stumbled on this comment yesterday, I was beyond flattered – even more so because it was posted by the awesome Ilsa Madden-Mills, author of the Amazon bestseller Very Bad Things:

“…holy hell, I stumbled across a vampire book by a British author Lindsay J. Pryor. It’s layered and deep and riveting and sexy all rolled into one. It reminded me a little of the Ward books, although…and this is hard for me…I think they are better. Yes, I said it. Don’t get me wrong, Ward is my all-time fav paranormal romance writer, but Lindsay managed to combine the dark with MORE sexy…”

So, as I’m sure this recent chart peak is no fluke, I want to say a MASSIVE thank you to Ilsa Madden-Mills for her public declaration of fandom for Blood Shadows and to the equally fantastic Maryse of Maryse’s Book Blog for posting Ilsa’s comment on her blog. Ladies, you’re wonderful!

9999

And, of course, to everyone who has recently bought a copy of Blood Shadows (and Blood Roses), I want to say HUGE thanks to you too – this doesn’t happen without you. Welcome to Blackthorn!

Blackthorn At Number One!

I was beside myself with excitement this morning when my wonderful publisher Bookouture, emailed to let me know Blood Shadows has hit the top spot.

For the first time ever, Blood Shadows reached number 1 in the Amazon.com Gothic Romance chart.

Screen Capture9

Not just that, but number 3 in the Amazon.com Paranormal Romance chart.

Screen Capture10

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Blood Shadows hit number 103 on the entire Amazon.com kindle charts!!

It’s even at number 6 in the UK Amazon Gothic Romance chart!

Rankings forever fluctuate so, yes, I’m making the most of the moment. 🙂

Thank you so, so much to everyone who has helped spread the word about my Blackthorn books – let alone Bookouture for working so hard to get my books into the hands of readers. And for everyone who heard this news earlier today, thank you for your amazing comments of support on Twitter, my Facebook page and your messages by email. This is SO much more fun having Team Blackthorn to share it with. Xx

Blackthorn Survival Guide

A little while ago, Blackthorn devotee, Amity Grays mentioned the prospect of a survival guide to Blackthorn in one of her blog posts. The idea quickly caught on. The problem is, Blackthorn is a complex place with a culture all of its own. More to the point, I’m still keeping some of it hidden from you at the moment – so knowing where to begin wasn’t easy.

Untitled-1

But some readers want to delve a little deeper into Blackthorn regardless of a guide. The last intrepid bloggers to venture into the district were DaVinciKittie and Molly over on GraveTells, who dared to enter the Dehain brothers’ club. And let’s not forget brave Aimee Duffy who was the first to ever try to interview Kane Malloy (apparently she’s still in recovery). And now, Tracey Rogers, another Blackthorn devotee, decided it was time she ventured into Blackthorn – only she took me with her for an on-the-spot interview! (I’m obviously back, I’m only hoping she is!)

For everyone else, I’ve broken you in gently so far – keeping you more or less in the confines of Kane’s place (Blood Shadows) or Caleb’s (Blood Roses). But I can’t hold back any longer. With Blood Torn, you’re not just heading into the lycan compound, but into some of the murkier depths of Blackthorn. And it doesn’t get much better from there, at least for a while. So I resolved it was time I pulled together a few pointers for the next stage of our journey.

First, let’s have a quick recap on a couple of demographic basics (remember you can refer to my Beneath Blackthorn posts here on my blog if you want to understand more about the make-up of the world):

  • Each locale is made up of four bordered districts. Blackthorn district is the core of one locale. It’s where the third species reside, consisting mainly of vampires and lycans. But there are humans (and a few others!) too.
  • Within Blackthorn itself, East is Kane’s territory, West is Caleb’s and North is Jask’s. The hub of the district is set in the west, which is the centre of nightlife activity.

The hub is exactly where you’re most likely heading if you’ve planned a night out in Blackthorn. Let’s assume you’re maybe from Midtown or Summerton and that you’ve never been to Blackthorn before. What advice would I give?

Here’s an essential 15-point guide to make your night out in Blackthorn as enjoyable and safe as possible:

Be prepared

  • Dress appropriately. If you’re heading to the hub of Blackthorn, you’re entering the party capital. Dress to blend in. Look like a newbie and you may as well stamp victim on your forehead. Trust me, residents will know!
  • Don’t go in alone. Groups are better.
  • Don’t go kitted up like some member of a 80s or 90s vampire-killing film. The third species aren’t inherently evil, they aren’t the undead – they’re just a different species. You’ll either die from humiliation or an unappreciative resident.

Mind your language!

  • Don’t mention ‘fangs’ to vampires, unless you plan on it being an insult. Blackthorn vampires have an extra set of lateral incisors, not fangs. Lycans use cuspids (canines). Referring to fangs is a prime way to show that not only are you a newbie, but that you actually believe the old stereotypes – never a good icebreaker in Blackthorn.
  • Don’t mention you’re from Midtown or Summerton. Remember, your privileged lifestyle will be a sore point. You’re from across the border in Lowtown, if anyone asks.

Watch your behaviour

  • Keep your eyes up and ahead. Don’t avoid eye contact, but keep it fleeting and never take a second glance.
  • Basically, don’t stare. Prolonged eye contact with another means either you’re interested in them or you’re looking for trouble. Staring at ‘events’ means you’re willing and able to join in whatever is going on.
  • Don’t ask for directions. Ever.

What to avoid

  • Watch out for vampires who roam alone, and watch out for humans who roam in groups away from the crowds.
  • Avoid anyone with numbers tattooed on their inner arms. That’s all I’ll say for now!
  • Stick to the main streets, no matter how busy. Quieter most certainly does not mean safer.
  • Don’t ever go to The Circus – it really isn’t what you think.
  • Avoid the old cinema. It’s been transferred to live performances you don’t want to witness.
  • Public feedings are illegal.
  • If you’re asked if you’re interested in being a feeder, say no. And avoid being bitten at all costs. You’re going to have to get through a lot of red tape to return to Midtown or Summerton if you don’t!

I hope that helps! Now to find Tracey…
